Matcha Morning: why is a bamboo whisk better?

If you're a fan of matcha culture on social media or enjoy crafting your own matcha lattes at home, you've likely encountered the traditional bamboo whisk, known as a chasen. But at some point, you’ve probably wondered: why not just use an electric frother instead? Wouldn’t it be much easier?

From my experience, the key to a perfect matcha latte lies in achieving the ideal microfoam (those tiny, delicate bubbles that create a smooth, creamy texture). When using an electric frother, however, the bubbles tend to be larger, disrupting the velvety consistency that makes matcha so enjoyable. So firstly, the consistency would differ.


Secondly, the clumps are terrible. High quality matcha powder is fine, which makes it prone to clumping. A bamboo whisk gently dissolves the powder evenly. Using an electric frother leaves you with a grainy odd texture. Besides the texture, all the air from a milk frother dilutes the matcha’s flavor; this is why most matchas you buy from a café taste like grass and not like a Japanese green delicacy.


Finally, you’re missing out on a meditative experience. The art of whisking matcha with a chasen has been practiced for centuries in Japanese tea ceremonies, promoting a moment of tranquility and connection. The slow, circular whisking motion encourages mindfulness, making the experience more enjoyable and meditative.


In the end, a bamboo whisk isn’t just about tradition: it’s about quality, texture, and experience. While an electric frother may seem like a convenient alternative, it simply can’t achieve the same smooth, creamy consistency or properly dissolve the matcha powder without clumps. More importantly, using a chasen allows you to fully embrace the ritual of making matcha, turning it into a mindful moment rather than just another drink. So if you truly want to enjoy matcha at its best, the bamboo whisk is the way to go.

Right?! It’s wild how something as simple as a bamboo whisk can elevate the whole experience in its texture, flavour, and even the mindfulness of it. Makes me want to try making matcha this way!!
